The Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro have shown it! Volleyball, especially beach volleyball, is extremely popular in Brazil.
The Ginasio do Maracanazinho hall was bursting at the seams when the Brazilian men's national team won Olympic gold 3:0 over Italy. China won the women's competition.
In the beach volleyball competitions at the world-famous Copacabana, the temporary arena was also full to bursting. There, the German women's beach duo Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst made beach volleyball history.
The two won the very first Olympic medal for a European women's pairing - and in gold, too. In the men's event, local heroes Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmid prevailed.
